Essay directions, formatting and support materials
Requirements for ALL Essays:
1) MLA format (size 12 font, Times New Roman font, original title, double-spaced, proper heading and pagination)

2) A minimum of 4 paragraphs (Intro., two body paragraphs and a conclusion)
a) Introduction must begin with a HOOK and end with a THESIS STATEMENT. Your thesis should make a claim about the
topic; it should not offer a fact (Opinion vs. Fact)
b) Each body paragraph must start with a TOPIC SENTENCE and have two pieces of evidence (quotes/concrete details) that
support the TOPIC SENTENCE and are linked to the thesis. EVERY QUOTE/PIECE OF EVIDENCE MUST INCLUDE THE PAGE
NUMBER (IN PARENTHESIS) AT THE END OF THE QUOTE (PARENTHETICAL CITATION). How to embed quotes.

c) The conclusion revisits the thesis but DOES NOT repeat it word for word; it connects the topic of the essay to a big
idea/message about humanity - an original observation or connection.
